Educating yourself to learn another language is one of the most rewarding challenges that you can undertake. Learning the native tongue of the countries you travel adds wonders to an already thrilling experience.
There are a lot of language products that claim to teach a foreign language. How do you know which products are effective and which ones aren’t? We put up this site in an effort to share our experience with anybody that is wanting to learn to speak French.
The application I am reviewing is Rocket French(tm) which is produced by a company named Rocket Language Ltd. Marie-Claire created the course and is a native Frenchman. This company is one of the best for producing high quality language learning courses which include Spanish,French,Italian,German,Chinese,American Sign Language and Japanese.
The very first lesson has 31 audio tracks that will have you speaking at a fundamental level of french in your first lesson. The instruction is focused on conversational French which means you will be able to converse with native French speakers in your travels. You will feel comfortable speaking with the locals, asking for directions, ordering in restaurants etc.
Audio transcripts are included with the lessonss and I found that particularly helpful in following along. Keep in mind that each audio is right around 20 minutes in length which means the full module is about 11 hours of content. The techniques in the lessons will allow you to absorb and speak modern French quickly. The just over eleven hours of of training may seem excessive, but with the use of the audio tracks the time goes by very quickly and effortlessly.
The system includes an application that makes picking up the french language easy and fun. The software included with the system is what they call MegaVocab(tm).
The software works by recognizing vocabulary. I found this very helpful in the beginning. It works by having you repeat a series of words and you learn the words through repetition, and an association with a picture. Very similar to flashcards you used to learn with when you were a kid.
The software has 1000 words and pictures built into it, but it also allows you to include your own set of pictures and words as you advance with the language.
Once I started to learn the vocabulary I went on to the MegaAudio(tm) software. It was at this juncture of my training where I started to feel confident about all I had learned.
The system comes complete with lessons that test and improve your recognition of the spoken words. The software scores you with each exercise allowing you to keep track of your progress.
I enjoyed using this software. It is one thing to learn the vocabulary, but to understand it when spoken is another. This is a crucial point where most of the competitors fail miserably, and where Rocket French excels.
An additional benefit of the Rocket French(tm) program was that it isn’t just an introductory course. The course is designed with the assumption that the student has no previous french speaking experience when starting. But it continues to an advanced level as well. I felt like this increased the value of the program because I wouldn’t have to go out and buy a more advanced course as I progressed.
Possibly the most impressive part of this course is the members only forum where you can communicate with students and ask needed questions and the Rocket Language online instructors. To me, this forum made the cost of this course a real bargain. If you happen to get stuck on something, you find lots of help in the forum.
My closing comment involves the cost of this language system. Because I was ready to go right away I was delighted to find that they offered a download option which means they don’t have to ship out CD’s, software and printed material. They offer a two hundred dollar discount if you choose the download option (which is what I did). I was then able to listen on my computer, burn the material to a CD, and even use my ipod to listen. By purchasing the downloaded course I was able to save myself two hundred dollars and I picked the course up for just under $100.
To top it all off, the folks at Rocket offer the course with a 60 day guarantee with no questions asked. When I consider the quality of the material presented, the software, the forum participation, the guarantee, and the bargain price, I can only give the Rocket system of learning French a solid five out of five stars. If you are looking to learn French, I find it hard to believe there is anything in the same price range that is comparable.
