You Can Heal Your Life

The book that changed my thinking about health and our ability to heal our bodies is the classic from Louise Hay “You Can Heal Your Life.”

This is the single greatest book on the power of our emotions and thoughts on our overall health.

Louise Hay has healed herself from cancer. She explains how she does it in this very enlightening book. Louise was way ahead of her time as her first copy of this book was back in 1984. There have been countless updates as this is a perennial winner in the health and healing world.

When I first read this book I would read about the illness I had at the time such as a sore throat and see what the good book had to say. For example, when we experience a sore throat, we are “holding in angry words. Feeling unable to express the self.”

Louise recommends contemplating the root issues of a sore throat - what are you angry at or unable to express? Moreover, she advises you to repeat the affirmation ” I release all restrictions, I am free to be me.”

You will be amazed at how changing your thoughts and focusing on your pending emotional issue can arrest any illness. By going to the root emotional cause, the illness dissipates.

Just last year I woke up with a migraine headache and I was really bummed out about it since I had a very fun day planned.

My first order of business was to grab Louise Hay’s book and see what was my root issue for this migraine since I have only had a handful in my life.

The root cause of a migraine says “Dislike of being driven. Resisting the flow of life.”

I layed down in my bed and thought about these words. Yes, I was being driven in my new business at the time and not happy about it. I agreed with this.

My next step was to find out the affirmation for a migraine. ” I relax into the flow of life and let life provide all that I need easily and comfortably. Life is for me.”

I repeated these words to myself. It was not more than 45 minutes later and I was in the shower and off for the day. The migraine never came back that day, nor have I had a migraine since!

I give all kudos to this wonderful book. Now I will warn you, like me, at first you will not agree with the root causes of your illness. You will do all to resist what it says. - No way is that my root cause. - Expect this resistance from yourself. It is the ego keeping you from your reality.

Just fast forward and believe the root causes in the book and your healing will happen much faster than you expect. The more you practice what Louise Hay outlines in this book, the better your life and health will be.

This is the book that changed my life. It has brought me health and healing. It sits on my coffee table and its worn torn pages show how many times I have accessed it to let family members know their emotional status!

Be it sinus, lupus, pneumonia, diabetes, infection, asthma, cancer, sore throat etc, you will find this a handy guide to healing your life.

Looking For Assertiveness Courses?

January 2, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

by Steven Griggs, Ph.D.
Looking For Assertiveness Courses?
Most people think if they take a course on Assertiveness,
they will learn the techniques and instantly be more effective
in their communication. For a small minority, this is true.
For most people, it is more important first to learn the steps
of assertiveness, no matter what the format or venue.
I am a psychologist in private practice (over twenty years).
Every day I teach clients how to be assertive. It is simple
and only requires that we understand the basic five steps
to start. Then, a little instruction on technique and some
practice rounds out the learning curve.
What are the five steps? Here is a brief description.
Step One is asking yourself what are you thinking or feeling.
Step Two is about validating that your thoughts and/or feelings
are important. Step Three is thinking and planning how we might
express ourselves, assuming we get through Step Two. Most of
us do not actually think what we have to say is important enough
to say or do something about. Step Four is actually executing
the plan; that is, doing what we fantasized in Step Three.
Step Five is feedback. How did it go? If we achieved some
satisfaction, we are done with that thought. If not, it is
back to Step One.
Normally, I would explain each of these steps in greater
detail, even in a short article such as this one. However,
I have taken great care and written about Assertiveness in an
ebook (see below) that covers these ideas and a lot more.
You need to have a lot more information to make assertiveness
work, but the basic five steps is the start, and for many, is
enough to make a difference in their communication.
In another article, I wrote about the Top Ten Reasons To
Not Be Assertive. I was having some fun, describing all the
“whining” and other complaints I hear every day. They do
serve a purpose, and can be very entertaining in Assertiveness
Courses. They make good “Psychodrama.” Again, do you really
need to review your excuses for not effectively communicating?
Probably not. My guess is that you already know you are not
very assertive and you probably already know some of the major
reasons why. Why else would you be reading this?
My point is that you probably do not need a formal course
on assertiveness. It is not that complicated a topic.
My ebook is very popular but I did not write it as a major work
unto itself, despite that people have downloaded it as often
as my other publications. Rather, it was sort of an
afterthought to other works I have written (Self Esteem,
Diagnosing and Treating Your Anxiety, How To Change Children’s
Behavior…). It turns out becoming more assertive can be
achieved by reading a “How To” manual, which is less demanding
on our resources (time, money, etc.). It turns out, becoming
more assertive improves our “condition” in any of the above
areas, making dealing with anxiety, children, and self esteem
much easier.
The real effect of becoming assertive is feeling better
about ourselves, clearing our own psyches of baggage and
getting more of what we want. You can take a formal course
on this, or read.

2nd Most Important Meal of the Day-Post Workout Nutrition

January 2, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

by Jason Yun
The second most important meal of the day—Post Training, or Post Game, Post-Practice, Post Workout, Post Activity. During activity the body is stressed physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your muscle glycogen stores (stored carbohydrate) in the muscle and the liver have been depleted. Even with the best pre-workout nutrition, depletion of glycogen levels and amino acid stores is inevitable. You are currently in state of catabolism (muscle and tissue breakdown). You need to switch off the catabolic state and turn on an anabolic one (muscle and tissue repair). The window to do this is not long. Various studies have shown it to be as little as 30 minutes, while others have shown it to be up to 90 minutes after activity. I tend to give a recommendation of 45 minutes, 60 minutes at the most. But the sooner you get the nutrients you need into the body, the faster the body can recover to a normal homeostasis.

Carbohydrate is the most important nutrient needed at this time. The carbs that you consume should be simple sugars. You want foods that will elevate your blood sugar level and get into the blood stream as quickly as possible to replenish the lost glycogen. Sports drinks will do the job, fruits, supplement carbohydrate drinks work well, too. Baked potato is an ok choice. Sugary cereal like frosted flakes, sugar smacks are ok too, especially combined with no- or very low fat milk. But remember the window for this meal is small so if you have to drive home and prepare this stuff you might miss that window.

You want this meal to be in a ratio of at least 2 to 1 carbohydrate to protein. The reason being is protein is harder to digest. Post workout is the best time to take a liquid supplement, like Prograde Workout, because it’s pre-made with carbs and protein and liquid will digest a lot quicker than whole foods. Another good option is chocolate milk.

The protein you digest in this meal you also want to get in the bloodstream quickly. Again chocolate milk is a good option. Others are regular milk and a whey protein supplement, or a blended supplement, like Workout, as mentioned before. Whey is better than the other protein sources because it gets uploaded into the bloodstream and replenishes the amino acid pool much quicker than any other type. Whole protein foods aren’t as good choices post-training, but if that’s all that you have it is still much better than nothing. But stick with very lean or no fat choices like egg whites, chicken, turkey breast, and lean cuts of beef. However, if optimal recovery is your goal, I highly recommend a liquid form of carbohydrates and protein. Most of the time I do recommend whole foods over supplements, but liquids ensure that you get the proper nutrients in the right time.

As for fat, in the post-training meal, eliminate it. You do not want fat in this meal. Fat has the tendency to slow the absorption rate and digestion rate down, meaning it will take longer for the nutrients you need, carbs and protein, to reach their desired location. And it could even cause those nutrients to be less effective, or even miss the window of opportunity all together. Some fat is good– some is bad. All fat is bad post-training time. Don’t eat it!

As you can see this meal is very important. Second only to breakfast. It’s just as important to people trying to lose fat, as it is to people trying to gain muscle mass, or strength, or compete in a sporting event. If you skip it, your body has to work extra hard to make up for the lost nutrients, especially carbohydrates and protein, that occurred during the workout. Your body doesn’t like this extra work, and usually, if the workout was even moderately intense, won’t come close to reaching ‘pre-workout’ state. So in essence everything slows down, your fat burning ability, your muscle building ability, and your metabolism.

Changing Children’s Behavior (Quickly)

January 2, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

by Steven Griggs, Ph.D.
CHANGING CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOR

In my practice as an outpatient child psychologist, I have seen thousands of kids over the last twenty years. Parents drag them into my office for lots and lots of reasons, usually because the kids are acting out. Sometimes, this is about parents not getting their way, but by and by, on their own, kids are very capable of causing their parents considerable grief.
The most common reason I see children is ADHD and/or learning disabilities. These “present” as a cluster of symptoms, ranging from simple oppositional or resistant behaviors to full blown, aggressive acting out behaviors. We hear the word “No” a lot from these kids, but we also see them having a hard time focusing, sitting still, organizing and managing their impulses.
Kids without ADHD or other psychiatric conditions also showcase their bad behaviors. Maybe their parents are separated or their girlfriend just dumped them. Maybe their parents have inadvertently taught them to misbehave because of poor parenting skills.
In my practice, I approach the behavior part of this package (as opposed to the medical part) with a set of principles. These form the basis of parenting skills, but they also are necessary to deal with everyone–adults too. My principles came from working with families for decades. They have been hammered out over time on the anvil of real human experience, highlighted by sometimes-severe troubled behaviors. So, it does not matter too much if the child is psychiatric or normal with difficult circumstances, I treat them the same, behaviorally. The exception to this is if a child’s behavior is so difficult that he or she is in need of a higher level of care. My principles work with this population, but first they will have to “tone it down” before they can fit into an outpatient setting.
One of the things I notice right away about children are their positive quality or good traits, behaviors, etc. Put negatively, I try to see what positive goal they have by behaving badly. There always is one. I try to see what positive qualities a child has that are not related to his awful behaviors. I try to look for future behaviors that might help the child achieve his or her goals, without the behavioral fallout.
This is not difficulty. Every person has some good qualities, even criminals. We just have to look harder or dig a little deeper in some cases. In my experience with kids, their good qualities jump out at me almost immediately. I am going to use those qualities to shape, condition, or gently encourage movement towards some positive behavior. I am going to choose a behavior that is just the opposite of the one parents do not like. I am not going to focus on punishing the negative behavior, unless necessary. I am going to focus on what is positive and incompatible with the negative one. I think of it as working with the presence of a positive behavior, not working with the absence of a negative behavior. Most kids, especially young ones, and some adults, too, do not understand the difference between the presence of something positive vs. the absence of something negative. This is one of the most powerful concepts (principles) parents need to grasp. Without it, their parenting attempts will fail by as much as thirty percent. Conversely, pay attention to just this one aspect of their parenting style, and parents’ chances of success increase by this same percent.
This is just one of several core concepts I wrote about in my ebook, How To Change Children’s Behavior (Quickly). Parents wanted a concise, pithy, filled-to-the-brim-with-techniques ebook that would turn their kids’ behavior around in the shortest possible time, without emphasizing punishment. I wrote such a treatise, which as it turns out, is a stand-alone product; that is, it works just as well if we do not meet in my office.
