Selecting The Best Equestrian Rugs - The Benefits Of Each Type and Whats Best

March 31, 2009 · Filed Under Sports and Recreation · Comment

by Tammy Patterson
STABLE RUGS
Stable rugs are designed for warmth when in the stable. Most stable rugs are made from synthetic materials. They are available in different weights / thicknesses and are usually either quilted or padded. The varying weights of stable rugs aim to cover all variety of needs, but stable rugs can be worn as a layer, with either thinner rugs underneath or layered in different thicknesses.

Stable rugs should be deep enough so as none of the horses belly is visible. Most will have fastenings at the chest and cross over sursingles under the belly. Some also have fillet strings at their rear for additional security. If there are no underside sursingles on the rug, either an elastic sursingle or a roller should be used to secure the rug around the horse’s belly. These should be fitted in the same place as the girth sits and no buckles or fastenings should rest over the spine or other sensitive areas of the horse.

TURNOUT / OUTDOOR RUGS
Designed for horses’ to wear when out in the field. They help to keep horses dry, clean and warm. There are many different weights of equine turnout rug providing varying degrees of warmth and padding. They are made using synthetic materials and because of this have the advantage of being lighter in weight, without compromising its ability to be waterproof or warm. Some modern turnout rugs are prone to rips, tears or snagging to the fabric although many modern rugs are now made using ‘Ripstop’ material that aims to combat this problem.

There are heavier duty outdoor equestrian rugs, these are called New Zealand rugs. They are made from a traditional canvas or waxed cotton material. These rugs are a popular choice for horses where weather is likely to be more severe, e.g. snow, ice and sleet. Thinner rugs can be worn underneath for additional warmth and comfort. The extra weight that unfortunately provides these rugs with their excellent durability can often cause the hair on the horse’s shoulders and other prominent features to be rubbed away. Many are fleece lined or padded but this is still a common problem. Vests or Bibs can be worn in conjunction with these to help stop hair loss.

All outdoor rugs should be deep enough in length for warmth and protection, preferably with shoulder movement pleats for better freedom of movement and with a good overlap where the chest straps join. They should be fitted using cross over belly sursingles, the chest straps and either a fillet string or rear leg straps.

The primary objective when choosing a turnout or New Zealand rug is warmth and comfort. Think carefully and decide what qualities your horse needs from their rug to ensure you get the right one.

ANTI-RUB VESTS, BIBS AND SHOULDER VESTS
These are designed for use under other rugs where hair loss on the shoulders or other areas is a problem. Their elasticated thin material fits over the horse’s shoulders, withers and chest, providing protection from friction allowing heavier top rugs to slide over them.

FLY RUGS
Fly rugs and fly sheets are designed for one purpose, offering protection to horses in the field from flies and other bugs and insects. They are lightweight and usually made from a fine mesh material. Fitted using chest straps, cross over sursingles under the belly and either fillet strings or rear leg straps. Fly fringes are also used to assist in the prevention of irritation around the horse’s eyes.

SHEETS AND TRAVEL RUGS
It is not only the winter months or cold evenings that horses will benefit from a light covering. They are great for preventing dust from sitting on a horses coat and are also excellent for use when travelling horses, helping to prevent nicks and give a layer of additional protection. Sheets are made of a single layer of thin material, travel rugs can be slightly more substantial in thickness although the weights of both can vary depending on the manufacturer.

COOLERS
These are breathable and moisture wicking rugs that aim to help keep horses warm, dry and ventilated. They are particularly beneficial after exercise when horses are sweaty or after wet weather to prevent them from getting a chill. It is better for a horse to be dry before having stable or turnout rugs put on. Many people refer to this type of rug as a Thermatex rug.

Learn How To Become A Quarterback

March 31, 2009 · Filed Under Sports and Recreation · Comment

by John Salmon
In all of my research, over a period of several years, the finest information I have ever read on quarterback leadership came from my friend Frank Carideo. The purpose of this information was to outline the process by which a quarterback was trained at Notre Dame, under coach Knute Rockne. This course of quarterbacking was as exacting in many respects as any collegiate course.

Coach Rockne had seven cardinal principles of quarterbacking that were preached over and over again.

1. A Quarterback must maintain a cocky air at all times.

a. You want your Quarterback to show other teams that he knows what he is going to do next-there isn’t a bit of doubt in his mind about what he is going to do on the next play.

b. You want his facial expressions to indicate to your team and your opponents’ team that he not only knows what he is going to do next, but that he is going to do it successfully, for all that they can do to stop him.

c. Be sure he understands that this is just an air. It is a role he is playing. It isn’t himself that you want to be cocky; it is the Quarterback. You don’t want your boys to be too cocky. There is a limit, and he must know it.

He might offend the members of his own team. His job is to irritate the members of the other team, not his own. You want that cocky air at all times-and on the practice field is one of the times.

2. You want a Quarterback with a clear, staccato voice. You want a voice that is forceful and decisive. You want it to be heard and to be understood when it is heard. You want it to be recognized by your own team as the command of one who is about to lead his army somewhere to a definite objective. You want it to be recognized by the enemy as the voice of one who is going to reach that objective with his army, no matter what might be done by anyone to stop it.

3. This third law is a variation of the first. You want your Quarterback to know what he is going to do next and to do it. You don’t want him to show at any time, at any time whatever, that he is in doubt about his next move. And, you don’t want him to show that he is worried or communicate any such feeling to his team. Stress this point-though we are beaten-and at times badly-we will never become demoralized.

4. The fourth law of generalship is a vital one: Observation, at all times, of the defensive alignment of the opposition. Have him observe at all times and ask himself the question: Who made the tackle? Also those that were not in on the tackles. Try to observe any glaring weakness in the defensive line or in the secondary. Especially on passes. Illustration on a charging half back and shooting line backer.

5. Choice of plays. Remember what plays have been going successfully and, of equal importance, those that have failed to gain ground. If plays gain ground they should be used until the defense shifts about to meet them. Then it will be time to resort to other plays. There is no law against returning to the successful plays later on if conditions warrant.

6. The sixth law comes into the field of generalship and strategy. At all times the Quarterback must keep his plays in sequence order. Some plays are to be used as checks, others as feelers. At times it may be necessary to sacrifice a play to make those that are to follow successful. This, of course, necessitates a quarterback’s looking a long way ahead.

7. The seventh and last law is one of precaution. Whenever in doubt, your Quarterback should do one of two things. The most natural is to kick. The other is to call time out and ask the linemen for information regarding the alignment and characteristics of the defensive linemen. More often you will punt when in doubt. Punting is almost always the safe procedure.

10 Simple Tricks To Personalising Your Automobile

March 31, 2009 · Filed Under Sports and Recreation · Comment

by Roberto Bell
British car culture is as advanced as any in the world, and in one area it positively excels. Yes, Americans and Europeans can get personalised license plates of various kinds, but leave it to us to make it a great investment. Personalised registrations have been increasing in value for several years and there is nothing to suggest that they won’t just keep on with it.

Now, there are other ways to make your car uniquely yours, and not all of them cost you a pretty penny, either. Along with the uniquely British plates, you can adopt and adapt ideas from car cultures around the world to personalise the rest of your ride, too. We’ll start up with the registrations, but after those the list is not in any particular order, and all the tips and tricks can be customised and stylised to be your very own. That said, here are your 10 simple tricks to personalising your automobile!

1. Prefix car registration numbers: These are DVLA number plates that have the year letter at the beginning of the series. They can be “C10 BOB” or “J7 ANN” as long as there are three letters, preceded by numbers from 1 to 999, with a prefix indicator that excludes the letters I, O, Q, U and Z. Prefix plates of this sort were assigned by DVLA Registrations between 1983 and 1999 and there are literally millions (a score of millions, really) for sale.

2. Dateless personalised plates: Such plates as “CR 6″ are called “cherished number” ones, and their incredible desirability means they will have the highest value. They are popular because the letters are first in the series. Private number plates of this kind that have three letters can follow them with numbers from 1 to 999, while those with two letters can have numbers from 1 to 9999 and go back as far as the year 1903.

3. Other personalised plates: Reversed dateless British car registration numbers like “6 MJR” are referred to as “reversed personalised” car registrations, and will usually have a bit less value than the classic kinds of “cherished” number plates. The “suffix car registration numbers” have the year letter at the end of the series like “ABC 1E.” Irish car registration numbers like “GAZ 27″ have two or three letters first, contain at minimum one I or Z, and then end with between one and four numbers. The particulars of the number and letter combinations can be researched at any good registration sales site.

4. Trim parts and chrome: Another good way to make your car your very own is to add (or upgrade) some chrome trim parts. Be careful adding chrome pieces like wheel well trim to modern makes that don’t use a lot of chrome or are mono-coloured. However, classic makes can really be spiffed up considerably with a little trim.

5. Window dressing: The top of your front windshield, or the lower section of your rear window, can be frosted or coloured so that your name or other caption can be set into it. You can cheer for your favourite footballer, band or MP, even.

6. Stripes and flames: They are much more popular in the States, but some car lovers here at home are trying out Union Jacks and pinstripes and even flame decals. Actually, there is no limit to the kind of decals or decorations with which you can adorn your auto, whether you stick flowers on the boot or stripes on the doors. Whatever reflects your style and your passion is a good candidate for the surface of your car, too!

7. Stickers and signs: You don’t have to make your bumper sticker personalisation a life-long thing, as there are removable stickers as well as frames that you can put the stickers in. These frames can be on the bumper or inside one of the side or rear windows, and you can broadcast your opinion without permanently pasting it to your ride.

8. Flags and pennants: Although not all cars have antennas anymore, those that do can use them as flagpoles. Fly your team colours, no matter what the sport, or show your patriotism with the Union Jack. If you are a playboy kind of chap, the skull and crossbones isn’t a bad choice. Ladies, you can put your favourite pennant up, too.

9. Communicative mud flaps: First popularised by truck drivers in the American Southwest, wheel well flaps no longer have just chrome images of ladies. These flaps can carry any message you care to send about you, your tastes, your politics or your hobbies. Put your phone number on there if you like!

10. Customising the interior: Not all of your personalisation has to be kept on the outside, or directed to passers-by. You can personalise the interior as well, in a huge number of ways. You can decorate, invest in comfort or do a little of both. What you want to accomplish, of course, is making the car “truly yours,” and that means having it reflect who you are. Don’t overdo things, and certainly don’t diminish the car’s comfort (or any legal requirements) just to make a statement.

Done right, your customising will make your car one of a kind, while retaining the comfort and performance features that make it a good car to begin with. Use your head, add a little from your heart and stay within the law, and you can have a car that is really “you” and unlike any other on the road!
