I want to thank you all for being here with me today. Sam was my older brother and also my only surviving family member. Sam and I lost our parents and two sisters in a car crash about ten years ago. It is still hard to believe that somebody who had as much energy as Sam did can be gone now. In so many ways, Sam was immortal to me. When I think of Sam, I always think of infinite existence. He was so creative, so brilliant and so alive - but quietly so. He did not need fame or fortune or recognition to know that what he was embarked upon was a good thing. He just knew.

For many of you who have been to the house, you know what I mean. When Sam became interested in oil painting, one of the bedrooms was quietly converted to his art studio. He would paint for hours upon end. Usually only eating if I brought him food. And as you know, his art was incredible. But he never showed it. I know some of you were given paintings by him as gifts. He knew you liked them, so they were yours. Treasure those paintings now.

Again, when Sam realized that our world was the information age. Silently and without offense the house had another bedroom converted to an office. And of course in no time at all, that office was filled with computer equipment and a work bench where computer parts and machines were all in various stages of building. Soon a bookshelf filled with reference manuals graced the room. It was not too long after that, Sam a brilliant architect with a very good career, was hanging certifications from Microsoft on his walls. You know, he just tacked them to the wall with a thumbtack. I was the one who put more reverence to them by getting them properly matted and framed.

And so it went with Sam. He was just a brilliant, quiet genius who could do anything that he chose.

Yet he was also there for his friends. I know there were so many times when each one of you found solace in Sam’s advice or friendship or warm gentle ways. And he was the kind of person who didn’t force his ideas or thoughts on you. He just listened and made his own comment about the situation. If you chose to do something about it. That was up to you.

The house is truly empty now. I am the only survivor of the Hendricks Family. I will do my best to carry the spirits of my family - and most especially, Sam - forward every day. Honor and love him too - carry his spirit with you.

When you think of Sam, think still of immortality and infinity because to me, even though he died at the age of 38, he is infinitely immortal.

The other day I was reading an article written by a man. He isn’t married and has no children. He mentioned in his article that he was very stressed just from working and doing things for his friends. He felt he had no time for himself. No time to unwind and have fun. I thought to myself, “This guy needs to really figure out what he is spending his time on”.

I have a husband to make happy, a house to clean, 3 children to nurture and teach, 2 cars to clean and maintain, a business to grow and that is just to name a few. I’m sure many of you mothers can relate. There are many times when I feel very pressed for time. I asked myself, “How can this man who only has a business and a couple of friends be so stressed and feel he has no time for himself?”

The answer is that we can all get carried away with the little and mundane tasks that get us through our day and forget to look at the big picture, no matter who we are or where we are in life.

So how do we fix this problem?

I recently made a list of all the tasks I do throughout the day. I made a new list for each day for about a week. I estimated how long I thought I was spending on each task. At the end of the week, I took a look at my lists and realized I was wasting quite a bit of time. Can you believe I spent a total of 15 hours checking and responding to emails during that week? That was just email!! Now I know I don’t get that many emails. I tend to get sidetracked when I’m reading my email. That is my problem.

What are your time-wasters?

I dare you to create similar lists for yourself for a week and see where you stand. Are there things you can spend less time on? I bet there are some things that can even be eliminated? How important is each task? Which ones are really contributing to your family or your business? Really look at those tasks, does your family or customers/clients really care if you tackle that task, or is it something that could wait for another day?

Scheduling time for ME.

If you want to have time for yourself, you really need to schedule it in. We schedule our work hours, we schedule in time for cooking dinner and spending time with the kids. We even schedule play dates for our children. Why don’t we schedule play dates for ourselves? These dates could be just browsing in a mall. They could be taking a bath or reading a book. Whatever it is that you need to help you unwind and feel alive, is what you need to schedule in to your daily calendar. You should be taking at least 15-60 minutes per day for yourself.

You need to schedule these dates in for yourself. You will rarely have a spare hour just pop up where you can decide to take off and do something for you unless you schedule it in.

I didn’t write it; it wrote itself. Now I know that sounds ridiculous on face value, but that’s actually what did indeed happen. Here’s how.

Why I Wrote All But My Soul

First, I’ve known since the 80’s through studying the work of James Pennebaker, Ph.D. that when you write about trauma, it releases from the physiology. And I didn’t want to go to my grave with this drama.

Secondly, my children were being told by their father (and his family) that I abandoned them, yet nothing could be further from the truth. What actually happened is I was abused out of their lives.

And lastly, I had learned so much about domestic violence and the legal abuse syndrome, I wanted to put it out there for the hundreds and thousands of people who are in abusive relationships and those headed toward one.

I wanted to help them see the dynamics of battering relationships and understand how domestic abuse can be transformed into legal domestic abuse. I wanted them to know that if they were encountering family court denying them the right and ability to protect their children and themselves that their case was not an anomaly.

I also wanted them to have information to better protect their children and themselves. I thought that by knowing the common strategies used to railroad domestic violence survivors through the system at the bequest of their perpetrators to silence the abuse, they would have an advantage.

So my intentions where pretty clear but the writing, well that was a different matter. I simply didn’t know where to begin. I thought about it for about two months and wrote nothing more than an outline.

How the Book Was Written

Then one day I had the honor of speaking with Byron Katie after one of her events. I told her that I had been struggling with writing a book. I said, “I need to write this book, and I can’t seem to get it out of me.”

Katie looked at me and said, “No, you don’t have to write that book; the book needs to write itself.”

So, I went home and thought who do I want to hear me speak? I placed pictures of my children around my monitor and every morning upon awakening I went directly to the keyboard. Exactly 100 days from the day I began, I had a 400 plus page first draft of the manuscript (most of which is the final draft).

The Inner Ache to the Outer Release

But I think when people ask me that question, what they really want to know is how did I get around, or over, the anger and anguish to bring pen to paper rather than resorting to the destruction of those that impacted the life of my children and myself? Or, as some do…rather than resorting to the destruction of myself.

Here’s how. Each time I would come to a player in our saga that would make my hair stand on end, I would pull back and run those feelings through The Work until I could go to the keyboard and effortlessly write their chapter.

So for me it was a zigzagging between inner work and outer expression. Compounding this was the way I allowed the material to come to me up from the inner depths of my own quietude. When I’d fatigue from writing, I’d sit in meditation until another block of thought rushed forth running me back to the keyboard.

In many respects the book did write itself, and what I did was get out of the way. My hope for you is if you have a story to tell, you do all that is necessary to allow it to pour out from you to benefit all those who are drawn to it. It has meant so much to me to hear how my writing has impacted women worldwide over the years.

So, what’s the problem with this format?

To be completely blunt, straight sets are an extremely inefficient way to order your exercises. In most commercial gyms you’ll typically see someone perform three sets of 10 reps for let’s say the bench press, or better yet a chest press machine (boy do I hate exercise machines - more on that later). They pump out 10 reps, go to the water fountain, talk with some buddies, watch a couple of highlights on ESPN, and then gingerly walk back to the bench area (or machine area) to hit up their second set. In general, most people, guys in particular, tend to take about 3-5 minutes between sets. In the case of three sets of 10 on the bench that means it would take up to 15 minutes to complete only one movement pattern (a horizontal push). That means you’d need at a minimum of an hour to perform no more than four measly exercises! No wonder body builders spend hours in the gym.

A much more effective and time-efficient approach to ordering your exercises is utilizing the alternating set format. Here you’ll perform one exercise, rest for a short period of time, then perform another non-competing exercise, rest for a short period of time, and so forth. Alternating sets allow you to work different areas of your body when you would otherwise be resting with the straight set format. Plus, by working another area of your body with a non-competing exercise you allow your body to recover from the previous exercise(s). The result is improved training economy and density: more work accomplished in less time, the cornerstone of any sound fat loss program. In addition we can now factor in some important corrective exercises like stretching tight muscles, working on mobility, or even doing some cardio based exercises too.

Here’s a quick example of what I’m talking about
